Patrick G. Dempsey is currently Chief of the Workplace Health Branch of NIOSH's Pittsburgh Mining Research Division. Abstract: Mining is a hazardous sector with a broad range of occupational exposures and hazards. The Workplace Health Branch within the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health performs research on hearing and musculoskeletal health, and develops interventions and tools to assist the mining industry with prevention. The presentation will focus on ergonomics approaches to preventing musculoskeletal disorders and slips, trips and falls. A unique app, ErgoMine (free on Google Play), that provides audits for three types of mining operations (bagging, haul truck, maintenance and repair) will be described. Current research on preventing slips, trips and falls in mining, and approaches to delivering safety and health information to mining stakeholders will also be summarized. The seminar will be followed by an informal discussion until 2:30 p.m.
