Black families play a significant role in the caregiving of family members. Black family caregiving is often performed with little to no outside help and often involves providing physical, mental, and emotional support. Studies have identified the unique challenges that Black families face in providing care for their aging relatives, such as limited access to quality health care, cultural differences, and the impact of racism on both the caregiver and the care recipient. Black family caregiving is complex and sometimes involves multiple family members, often creating an extensive care network; however, most are solo caregivers. While caregiving can be rewarding, it can also be a burden, leading to financial and emotional strain. Providing culturally competent care is essential to helping Black family caregivers successfully manage their responsibilities.
