Providing Inclusive Care to Transgender People
Ford Auditorium (2nd floor of Michigan Medicine)
Ford Auditorium (2nd floor of Michigan Medicine)
Are you interested in an interprofessional education (IPE) opportunity that will bring together students from different health-science programs at U-M? Faculty from pharmacy (Gundy Sweet, PharmD) and Social Work (Erin Khang, MSW; Dan Fischer, MSW) have modified one of the class sessions in the pharmacy ethics course to create an IPE opportunity that will allow students to learn together about an important topic in healthcare: providing care to transgender people. Open to health-science students who register in advance. Please note that registration will close on Sept 26 (or earlier if all spots have been filled). This 1.75 hour session will be facilitated by staff from the U-M Spectrum Center. Following a brief presentation, there will be a 3-member panel consisting of an individual who identifies as transgender, a parent of child who identifies as transgender, and a healthcare provider. Panel members will convey key concepts through their personal experiences. This will be followed by small group discussions where students from the different professions will be given time to identify factors that optimize transgender care, and ways in which interprofessional collaboration can influence overall patient care. The objectives are to: 1. Define key terms related to LGBTQ people 2. Identify three healthcare disparities that transgender people experience 3. Describe two actions healthcare providers can take to create a welcoming environment for LGB Interprofessional Education (IPE)
