Summer Interns' Window Views

Every year, nearly 200 SPH students take to the skies, roads, rivers, and seas as part of the school's vast summer internship program. The experience gives them vital knowledge and connections, and, as these images from some of 2010's interns attest, provides both a figurative and literal window on the world.

  • Lisa Zook, M.P.H. student in epidemiology: Worked with fellow M.P.H. epidemiology student Cam-Van Huynh in the  Michigan Department of Community Health's Division of Immunizations, where they  analyzed adolescent immunization data from the statewide vaccination registry.
  • Carrie Cantrell, M.P.H./M.S.W. candidate in HBHE: Worked with the agency Hekab Be Biblioteca in Akumal to promote health literacy among young people.
  • Debbie Gordon-Messer, M.P.H. student in HBHE: Helped the Instituto San Juan de Dios in Bogota develop a curriculum for a health class designed for students in grades six through 11.
  • Rachel Diehl, M.P.H. in EHS : Interned as a health educator in Quito's Barrio de Asistencia Social, presenting workshops to children, adolescents, and parents.
  • Jennifer Foulk, M.P.H. candidate in epidemiology: Worked with the CDC/Kenya Medical Research Institute in Kisumu on a seasonal influenza vaccine effectiveness study.
  • Celine Marie Barthelemy, M.P.H. student in HBHE: Worked on a malaria initiative in Ghana, shadowed and assisted public health nurses in both a district hospital and urban health center, and was part of an attachment with the director of health education/health promotion at the Central Regional Health Directorate.
  • Andrew M. Hickok, M.P.H. candidate in HBHE: Interned with the Fundacion Tejedores de Vida, a nongovernmental organization working with marginalized populations living with HIV.
  • Tianle Hu, Ph.D. student in biostatistics: Interned with the Travelers Companies applying statistical techniques to real-life health insurance problems.
  • Jonathan Anthony, M.P.H./M.S.I. candidate in HBHE/SI : Interned with the UM Centers for Health Communication Research, where among other duties, he helped create surveys and health messages using tailoring software.
  • Kate Pennington, M.P.H. student in HBHE: Worked on the John P. Snow Inc. Together for Health project, which seeks to improve the health of women, men, and families in Ukraine by helping people adopt modern family-planning and reproductive health practices rather than relying on abortion for birth control.
  • Tomek Koszylko, joint M.P.H./J.D. student: Conducted legal research on the effect of the federal health reform legislation on Illinois BlueCross BlueShield.
  • Kristefer Stojanovski, M.H.S.A./M.P.H. student in HMP and epidemiology: Interned with the Program on International Health and Human Rights at the Harvard School of Public Health.
  • Stefanie DeVita, M.P.H. student in epidemiology: Worked with fellow M.P.H. epidemiology student Cam-Van Huynh in the Michigan Department of Community Health's Division of Immunizations, where they analyzed adolescent immunization data from the statewide vaccination registry.
  • Marla Luckey, M.P.H. student in EHS: Researched water quality and chlorine use at the household level in Ecuadoran villages.
  • Lisa Zook, M.P.H. student in epidemiology: Spent the summer working on a Safe Motherhood Program for rural Nkhoma.
  • Trish Lin, M.H.S.A. student in HMP: Interned with HealthWorks, a department in Kaiser Permanente's Health Plan focused on marketing and delivering work-site wellness programs for employers.
  • Mozhgon Rajaee, M.P.H./M.S. candidate in EHS/SNRE: Measured exposure to mercury among women of childbearing age and children in a small-scale gold-mining community.
  • Emmanuelle Ravat-Franoise, M.P.H. student in HMP: Interned with the European Social Observatory researching European Union think tanks and their influence on health policy.
  • Lee Schrauben, M.P.H. student in epidemiology: Helped formulate a study examining the differences between male and female tuberculosis patients.
  • Joel Vikrant, M.P.H. student in HMP: Worked with the public health department on a health-system redesign at the National Health Service, Fife.
  • Ankush Sharma, M.P.H. student in HBHE: Interned with the WHO Department of Research Policy and the Global Forum on Health Research in Geneva.
  • Jacqueline Smith, M.P.H. candidate in HBHE: Interned at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, a charitable trust that uses yoga to enhance community health.
  • Will Story, Ph.D. student in HMP: Conducted interviews in rural Bangladesh for a qualitative research project funded by the UM Center for Global Health.
  • Rena Jie Sun, Ph.D. candidate in biostatistics: Interned with Novartis Oncology, learning about the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Casey Thacker, M.P.H. student in HBHE: Conducted a needs assessment to support construction of a regional hospital and coordinated a community Photovoice project.
  • Greg Powers, M.P.H. student in HBHE: With fellow HBHE student Lindsey Evans, helped collect and analyze data for a research project concerning HIV and the fertility aspirations of women in southwestern Uganda.
  • Megan Bensette, M.P.H. student in HBHE: As a public affairs intern in the Midwest Regional Office of U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service, worked with partner organizations and media to promote the 15 nutrition-assistance programs funded by the U.S.D.A.
  • Isabella Weber, M.P.H. student in HBHE: Interned with the U.S. Department of HHS, Office on Women's Health; worked on gender-based approaches to HIV/AIDS prevention.
  • Kari Wilder-Romans, M.P.H. student in EHS: Interned in the Public and Environmental Department at the Ministry of Health and Social Services in Windhoek.
