  • served as lead scientist/epidemiologist overseeing communicable disease control, immunization programs, environmental health, and vital records and health statistics for the state of Michigan.
  • Research interests include public health systems/services, surveillance and field investigation of infectious diseases, uses of isolation and quarantine, assessment of the public health workforce, and public health in China.
  • Founded and serves as Director of the SPH China CDC Scholar Exchange; collaborating with the China CDC in Tianjin and Beijing to facilitate scholar exchange, joint applied research which is supported by a $3.6 million/5 year NIH grant. Heads UM's Preventive Medicine Residency, which teaches doctors to understand health and disease on a population level as opposed to in individuals. Program received a $2.25 million dollar grant from the federal government in 2010 to expand its preventive medicine residency to help combat the expected shortfall of primary care physicians.
  • Directs CDC/HRSA-funded Center of Excellence in Public Health Workforce Studies.
