  • Became dean of UM SPH on Jan. 1, 2011, having previously served as senior associate dean for research at the school since 2004. Teaches toxicological pathology, conducts neuropathological and nanotechnology-based research.
  • Engaged in the development of optical nanosensors for intracellular applications in in vitro toxicology and dynamic nanoplatforms for the early detection and treatment of brain cancers. His research group is among the first to perform toxicology tests on polymeric nanoparticles for a variety of applications.
  • Co-developed synthetic nanoprobes--called PEBBLEs, for Probes Encapsulated By Biologically Localized Embedding--small enough to fit inside a cell without interrupting its normal functions. Currently at UM, PEBBLEs are used to measure the activity of metal ions (important players in many neurological diseases and conditions) as the cell works.
