  • Brings expertise in physiology and immunology to study the effects of environmental factors (such as nutrition and airborne particulates) on the molecular mechanisms of inflammatory diseases and host defense against bacterial pneumonia.
  • Pneumococcal pneumonia, malnutrition/starvation, pulmonary inflammation, leptin, macrophage biology, and eicosanoid (leukotrienes and prostaglandins) biology are main research areas.
  • Recognizes role of malnutrition and starvation as causes of immune suppression in the elderly and individuals with chronic illnesses such as cancer, AIDS, cystic fibrosis, and emphysema.
