U-M School of Public Health and NSF International team up to help international students

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan School of Public Health (SPH) has received a $2.5 million gift from NSF International to provide scholarship support for international students. Ten scholarships will be given each year beginning January of 2017. An underlying principle of the gift is to help fund students who, after receiving their world-class education, will return to their native countries to implement the knowledge, skills and expertise acquired through their studies at SPH.

Students will be selected from within the School of Public Health's six departments: Biostatistics, Environmental Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Health Behavior and Health Education, Health Management and Policy and Nutritional Sciences The areas of study include public health aspects of water quality, food safety and environment/sustainability.

"U-M School of Public Health and NSF International have enjoyed a long-standing, 70-plus year relationship and we are delighted to continue with that tradition," said Kevan Lawlor, president and chief executive officer of NSF International. "This gift will allow SPH-trained public health professionals to have a great impact in the field of global public health, in developed and developing countries."

Founded in 1944 at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, NSF International is now an independent organization that writes standards, and tests and certifies products for food, drinking water, and health sciences and consumer goods industries to minimize adverse health effects and protect the environment. NSF International's mission is to protect and improve human health worldwide. The organization operates in more than 165 countries and is a Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization Collaborating Center on Food Safety, Water Quality and Indoor Environment.
