Indirect Costs
The online degree programs offered by the School of Public Health can be an affordable option suited for students who prefer or require an online learning format. Below are some additional costs to consider as you budget for your master’s program.
- Housing and Living Expenses While online learners aren’t required to join us in housing on campus, it’s possible that the addition of master’s study to your life may have impacts on your current expenses. With that in mind, we advise students to consider what changes may occur regarding daily habits, housing, or bills when budgeting for graduate study.
- Technology It may come as no surprise that your computer and internet connection will be critical to your success in this program. We want to be as flexible as possible in letting you access your courses in a way that suits your needs and preferences; however, there are some parts of this program that require specific equipment that may involve additional costs to you.
- Books The cost of books for our online master’s programs can be relatively minimal. In fact, most reference material is made available online. However, this cost can vary by course or an individual’s desire to own print copies and/or supplement their learning with additional materials.
The Office of Financial Aid’s Cost of Attendance page will also help you estimate expenses during your time as a student, and interpret financial aid budgets.
Funding Your Degree
There are a variety of school-based, federal and private avenues to explore to help fund your degree costs. The School of Public Health is committed to ensuring our students have the resources, support, and ability to finance their public health degree. Over $4 Million in student aid is awarded annually from the School of Public Health.
The University of Michigan Office of Financial Aid assists students with securing funding for study at the School of Public Health. Funding can include federal and private loans, Federal Work-Study, need-based aid, and private grants and scholarships. For more information about funding options and resources, please contact the Office of Financial Aid.
School of PuBlic Health Scholarships
The School of Public Health considers all admitted online MPH students for partial tuition scholarships funded by the school. Scholarship awards from the School of Public Health are based on both need and merit and provide funding for up to 25% of your total tuition costs. Consideration is based on your degree program application materials. You are not required to submit any additional application materials to be considered. Applicants who meet the priority application deadline are offered first consideration for funding.
Last year, 45% of admitted online master's students were offered scholarship toward their degree.
Applicants are encouraged to explore the wide variety of scholarship and funding opportunities available in addition to this one from Michigan Public Health. To help you identify other opportunities that may be available to you, see our Prospective Student Funding Guide or visit the financial resources hub developed by our partners at Coursera. The resources in these links are external, non-University scholarship opportunities that may be of interest to University/College students. Inclusion of an external scholarship opportunity is intended only as a resource for students, and does not express or imply any University involvement with, or endorsement of, the external program.
Employer Tuition Reimbursement Programs
