I AM FPHLP 2015: Allante Moon
Allante Moon, a 2015 FPHLP participant, is currently a junior at Eastern Michigan University where she studies Health Administration with a minor in Social Work. Her field placement was with Joy-Southfield Community Development Corporation in Detroit, Michigan. Allante was responsible for preparing fruits and vegetables for the Sowing Seeds Growing Futures Farmers Market and served as a leader for the Healthy Empowered Youth (HEY) Detroit program. She also helped design a webpage and created promotional flyers to advertise HEAL (Healthy Eating Activity and Learning) workshops.
Allante’s greatest challenge while participating in the FPHLP was trying to figure out what specific track in Public Heath she wanted to pursue. She explains, “I was so used to hearing that there is a straight path to life.” The FPHLP emphasized that it is natural to have some uncertainty and helped Allante discover what transferable skills she has that will allow her to be successful in any professional endeavor.
The highlight of Allante’s experience was traveling to the CDC in Atlanta, Georgia. It was her first time flying to another state. “The CDC opened my eyes to new occupations and opportunities that I had never thought of!” Hearing from a diverse group of leaders inspired Allante to continue to strive toward greatness.
Since the program ended, Allante accepted a position as a Residential Mentor for the Eastern Michigan University Opportunity. “This program is designed for students who fall just below the regular admission standards but show the potential to succeed with first year guidance.” Allante looks to play a major role in providing direction for these students.
When she graduates, Allante would like to go on to earn a dual degree MPH/MSW. “I have learned what public health means, and I hope that I can study it more.” Thinking back to the experience that influenced her, Allante would advise any interested student to apply for the FPHLP. She challenges them to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. “Everyone’s path will definitely be different,” she says, “I personally strive for every new experience I can receive!”
