Meet Your Mentor: Dr. Jade Burns
Dr. Burns holds a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Michigan, a Master's of Science degree in Nursing (MSN-pediatric nurse practitioner, primary care) from the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Nursing from the University of Michigan. Dr. Burns' health service research focuses on innovative approaches using community-engaged research and technology (e.g., social media, mobile apps) to increase access to sexual health services for adolescents in community health centers. Dr. Burns' area of expertise in clinical practice as a pediatric nurse practitioner is adolescent health care, family planning, health promotion, and HIV/STI prevention. Her secondary area of interest is improving nursing practice and training programs in underserved areas.
Dr. Burns currently works with the Center of Sexuality and Health Disparities (U of M School Nursing & U of M School Public Health) and is an Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation (IHPI) Scholar. She also maintains in close collaboration with a variety of community partners within the city of Detroit and serves on a myriad of nursing and non-nursing organizations including the Michigan Organization of Adolescent Sexual Health (MOASH) and the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) Sex Education Advisory Board. She has a lot of energy and is excited to work with the students from the FPHLP program!!
