Faculty Profile

Abby Paulos, PhD
- Assistant Professor, Epidemiology
PhD, Environmental Engineering, UC Berkeley, 2023
MEng, Environmental Engineering, MIT, 2018
BS, Environmental Engineering, MIT, 2018
Dr. Paulos's research focuses on understanding and preventing infectious disease transmission
at the intersection of humans, animals, and the environment. She uses environmental
surveillance, molecular and genomic methods, epidemiologic modeling, and field-based
studies to investigate how pathogens move through communities and across species and
to identify environmental signals that can provide early warning of emerging infectious
disease threats. Her work spans wastewater-based epidemiology, zoonotic and environmental
transmission, and One Health surveillance, with a particular interest in developing
practical approaches for detecting and characterizing pathogens in complex environmental
settings. Ultimately, her research aims to integrate environmental data into infectious
disease surveillance and response to better understand transmission pathways, identify
populations at risk, and inform public health interventions.
