Doctoral Hooding

If you are a dissertation advisor for a doctoral student who will be graduating, we need you to participate in the hooding of your candidate. Your attendance is vitally important. Our on-stage doctoral hooding is now in its sixth year as an annual tradition, and it is a beautiful part of the ceremony.

Faculty Timeline

Time Activity
11:00 a.m. Faculty members who are hooding a student arrive for overview of hooding process. For the benefit of your students, we want to practice these steps to ensure the hooding is completed with grace and precision. Enter from the EAST entrance off Ingalls Mall and proceed directly to the auditorium stage.
11:45 a.m. All non-hooding faculty members arrive, proceed to the second level robing room, and put on academic attire. (Enter from EAST entrance off Ingalls Mall)
12:00 p.m. Faculty members begin lining up to process to the stage.
12:30 p.m. Graduation begins promptly with the procession of faculty.
2:30 p.m. Ceremony ends and reception on Ingalls Mall (adjacent to Hill Auditorium) beings. Although we are not able to predict the exact end time of the ceremony, 2:30 p.m. should be a reasonable approximation. Most guests typically leave the outdoor reception after an hour.

Non-Essential Items

Faculty members will be able to leave coats and small incidentals in the robing room during the ceremony. However, please be aware that this room is not locked, so you should avoid bringing valuables. You will not be able to carry non-essential items with you to the stage, so please do not bring them to the Auditorium.

All faculty members, graduates, family, and their friends are invited to attend the School of Public Health reception to be held on Ingalls Mall (adjacent to Hill Auditorium) immediately following the ceremony.

Our event photographer will roam briefly through the faculty robing room during robing. If there are special photos you'd like to take with other faculty, the dean, or the speaker, please speak up!

The same is true for any photos you want with your graduating student(s) and their guests. The best time and place to get photos with students is outside the Auditorium following the ceremony.
