Welcome from the President of the Public Health Student Assembly

PHSA headshotDear Incoming Students,

It is my honor and pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the University of Michigan School of Public Health on behalf of the Public Health Student Assembly (PHSA) and the entire student body. We sincerely congratulate you on your admission to the School of Public Health and applaud your continued commitment to advancing public health, especially during these uncertain times.

The development of effective health practices, community initiatives, and national policies depends on diverse perspectives and voices — and that is where you come in. Each of you brings a unique background, skill set, and perspective that will not only enrich our SPH community, but also contribute greatly to the field of public health in the years to come. Whether you are returning to the classroom, continuing your education, or switching career paths, the journey that led you here is deeply valued. No matter what point of your journey you are in, your perspectives and commitments to public health do not go unnoticed.

As you begin this next chapter at the School of Public Health, I’d like to share a few key pieces of advice:

  • First, draw upon the knowledge and experiences you have gained throughout your life — inside and outside the classroom. Whether from prior coursework, community involvement, political engagements, or conversations with family and friends, your experiences and perspectives provide valuable insights into the field of public health. These perspectives shed light on the complexities of both existing and potential public health programs, policies, and practices.
  • Second, don’t hesitate to engage in conversations beyond your program, across departments, and throughout the university. Public health thrives on collaboration and multidisciplinary teamwork, which often leads to comprehensive, innovative ideas that leverage your unique strengths and valuable perspectives.
  • Third, enjoy and make the most of your time here at the School of Public Health. Take advantage of the many opportunities this institution offers. Time will fly, and you never know what or who you might encounter that could make your experience even more enriching. Be open to new experiences and explore all potential avenues for impact — this is what public health is all about.

Your voice is essential in addressing the most pressing public health challenges of today and tomorrow. We fully believe in your potential to create meaningful change—across campus, in Michigan, and around the world. As a community grounded in learning, we are here to support you throughout your academic journey. As you prepare to join us in August, please remember that we are here for you. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, concerns, or even to chat about life at SPH.

We’re excited to welcome you soon.

Once again, congratulations and welcome to the University of Michigan School of Public Health!

Go Blue!
