Stephen A. Eklund, DrPH, DDS, MHSA

  • Professor Emeritus, Dental Public Health
  • Adjunct Professor, Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences and Endodontics, School of Dentistry
Stephen A. Eklund, D.D.S., Dr.P.H., professor of dental public health in the School of Public Health and adjunct clinical professor of dentistry in the School of Dentistry, retired from active faculty status on May 31, 2004, after a most productive career as a distinguished researcher and teacher.

Dr. Eklund received his B.S., D.D.S., M.H.S.A., and Dr.P.H. degrees from the University of Michigan in 1969, 1973, 1977, and 1981, respectively. He joined the University of Michigan faculty as a lecturer in dental public health in 1979 and was promoted to assistant professor in 1981, associate professor in 1987, and professor in 2001. Dr. Eklund received an additional appointment as assistant professor of dentistry in 1981. He was appointed adjunct associate professor in 1992 and adjunct clinical professor in 2002. Dr. Eklund is widely acknowledged, both nationally and internationally, as one of the leaders in his field. Several of his publications have been highlighted by journal editors and are described as classics with exceptionally high impact, and a textbook he co-authored is considered the standard for the field. His efforts to meld research in the epidemiology of oral disease with research on the provision and financing of dental care have created a new model of research outside of the usual "boxes." After many years of intense efforts, Dr. Eklund was able to accumulate a unique and unmatched set of records that provide the most comprehensive population based data on dental treatment ever assembled, covering 60-70% of the child population and nearly 40% of the adult population in Michigan since 1991. As a result of this work, he is now acknowledged as one of the best dental epidemiology methodologists in the world.

The Regents now salute this distinguished faculty member for his dedicated service by naming Stephen A. Eklund professor emeritus of dental public health.
