Drivers of maternal morbidity and mortality

Presenter: Sumreen Akhtar

This study evaluated the long term outcomes and impacts of the Public Health Boot Camp (PHBC), an intensive one-week certificate cohort model training program, on educational and professional outcomes for HIV/AIDS practitioners. Building a racially and ethnically diverse public health workforce is critical in reducing health inequities and barriers to care. A significant need exists to increase the number of Latino HIV/AIDS practitioners to address these issues.

“How Can Looking for Thrills Make Me Miserable?” is a middle school project-based science unit aligned with national standards covering the biology of substance use disorder (SUD). Students investigate gene-environment interaction and the brain’s reward system from an evolutionary perspective and examine their roles as risk and protective factors for SUD. Students conduct a culminating research project to prevent or reduce SUD in their community. They present results and recommendations at a “Health Summit” to peers, family and community.

We will present findings from the baseline data of the ChiCAS study, an intervention study aimed at increasing knowledge and use of PrEP among Spanish-speaking transgender Latina women in North and South Carolina. The analysis explores the associations between multiple forms of discrimination (e.g., based on race/ethnicity, gender identity, and documentation status), resilience factors (social support, pride), and multiple types of healthcare use.

Our study analyzed the results of an epigenome-wide association analysis (EWAS) conducted on a cohort of 137 mother-child dyads in the Health After Pregnancy—Intergenerational Transmission of Obesity (HAPi) study. We aimed to identify differentially methylated regions (DMRs) associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) exposure during pregnancy. We focused on the top CpG hits and identified several DMRs that could potentially explain the effects of GDM on both mothers and their offspring.

Roundtable presentation.  In this work, we will describe the complexities of managing a COVID-19 response which included the development of a campus-wide task force at an HBCU and a multi-sector collaboration with a state public health department, a federally qualified health center, a black-owned testing company and other stakeholders. We will describe the community engagement efforts that were required to implement COVID-19 surveillance testing and a required vaccination policy on campus.

We will offer recommendations on suggested personnel and structures for effective emergency response at HBCUs and the relevance of building disaster preparedness programs at HBCUs to advance the public health pipeline.

According to numerous studies, disasters can cause significant harm for pregnant persons and their offspring, due to trauma, barriers to prenatal care, stress, displacement, and various other factors. Nonetheless, further research is needed to properly understand the complexity of this association, protective factors, and the impact on both parent and child, particularly when considering multiple disasters in a single population. Puerto Rico provides a unique context for studying this association, as the U.S. territory has been afflicted by numerous disasters in the past decade, including hurricanes, earthquakes, and the COVID-19 pandemic. We examine potential impacts of these events on maternal and child health using birth data from the U.S. vital statistics system.
