Application
Completed applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Final decisions will be made by April 28, 2023.
Applications are considered complete when all materials have been uploaded and submitted and at least one letter of recommendation has been received. Recommendation letters should be sent as soon as possible in order for the application to be reviewed.
Application Process
Summer Institute in Biostatistics (SIBS) applications are restricted to U.S. citizens
and Permanent Residents.
Priority will be given to:
- Undergraduate students in their sophomore and junior years
- Students who have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence
- Underrepresented and disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities
- Students with convincing personal statements of interest in the program
Funding is available from internal resources and the Trehan Foundation for a very few additional slots. These slots are not supported by the SIBS. International students may apply for these slots, however admission and attendance is contingent on successful visa processing. Priority will be given to:
- Undergraduate students in their sophomore and junior years
- Students who have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence
- Underrepresented and disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities
- Students with convincing personal statements of interest in the program
All participants will attend the same program and activities, regardless of funding source and level of support.
To apply, external (non-UMICH) applicants will need to create a University of Michigan Friend Account.
When applying, please have the following information ready:
- Personal statement describing your personal interest in our program and how it could benefit your education and future career plans (no more than two pages, please)*
- CV*
- Unofficial transcripts*
- Name and email of one professional reference who can comment on your mathematical ability, data science interest, quantitative/computing skills (they will receive a link to upload their letter)
- List of relevant courses taken

Q. When will I be notified if my application has been accepted?
A. We will evaluate the applications on a rolling basis and notify you by email as
soon as the decision is reached, no later than April 28, 2023.
Q. My letter writer has not received an email request to submit my recommendation-
what should I do?
A. First check that you submitted your application. Your reference will not receive
an email request until your application is submitted. If your application is submitted
and your reference still has not received an email request, contact UMSPH-BDSI@umich.edu.
Q. How do I know if my reference submitted a letter of recommendation?
A. You will be notified via email when a letter of recommendation has been submitted
for your application.
Q. I started my application but didn't finish it. Now when I try to access it, I'm
unable to. What should I do?
A. If you save your application and return at a later time to complete it and are
having issues accessing your application or see a blank screen, please try refreshing
your page or switching to another browser. If neither of those options work, please
email UMSPH-BDSI@umich.edu for assistance.
