(SPH Students Only Virtual Workshop) Rooted, Resisting, Revolutionary: Collecting and Connecting our Power for Conscious Change
Online in Zoom
Online in Zoom

Workshop Description: Recent discussions around social, political and economic inequity have been amplified in response to “the perfect storm” of a pandemic, racial unrest, and political divide over the last few years. Often lacking from these conversations is sufficient attention to the historical and root causes of these inequities, the power imbalances they create, and their impact over time. Acknowledging how power dynamics show up, shift over time, and endure in our systems and ourselves helps us recognize entry points of intentional change with an inside-out approach, from the individual, to interpersonal, to institutional. Intended Audience: This session is open to all SPH students. It will be particularly be helpful for students who want to: - learn about the historical underpinnings of the harmful power imbalances we see and experience today, - begin to consider our own relationship to these power imbalances as students pursuing public health practice, and on our personal journey, - understand the connections between race and other aspects of identity such as gender, class, sexuality, ability, etc., - explore their own identities through cultural humility as a life-long practice of self-reflection and building relationships across identities; a key component of anti-racist practice and a prerequisite to transformation. Key takeaways include: Expanded analysis that reflects how historical and current power imbalance define and pattern the systems that drive health and inequitable outcomes. (Rooted) Recognition of varying dimensions of power to understand how they show up in ourselves and our institutions to find entry points for alternate ways of human being/doing necessary to disrupt these patterns. (Resisting) Understanding cultural humility as lifelong and necessary to move beyond changing policies and practices, to also changing hearts and minds. (Revolutionary)
