Dr. Hungers research uses insights from social psychology to understand and improve the health of stigmatized groups (e.g., higher body weight individuals, racial and sexual minorities). He often examine s the consequences of stigma through the theoretical lens of social identity threat. He employs both experimental and non-experimental methods, including experience sampling, daily diary designs, and theory-driven analyses of large population health datasets. He takes a diverse approach to health assessment, including outcomes such as physiological indicators of stress (e.g., cardiovascular reactivity), health behaviors (e.g., eating), psychological health (e.g., depression), and social well-being (e.g., loneliness). ​
