PEERRS
University of Michigan’s online Program for Education and Evaluation in Responsible Research and Scholarship (PEERRS) courses provide training required per university, state, and federal regulations regarding responsible conduct of research (RCR).
PEERRS certification may be required for participation on a study or project team, depending on your role (e.g., Principal Investigator), the funding source (e.g., NSF), and/or the type of research (e.g., human subjects).
As part of the research approval processes, an applicable U-M administrative office (e.g., ORSP, IRB) verifies your PEERRS certification status when you are listed as:
- An investigator on a project proposal (PAF)
- A study team member on a human subjects application (HUM)
PEERRS certifications are valid for three (3) years from the last completion date. Your PEERRS training certification must be up-to-date in order for:
- ORSP to award externally sponsored project funds (both new awards and increments to existing awards)
- U-M IRBs to approve human subject studies.
- IACUC to approve animal protocols.
Certification Process
Go to http://my.research.umich.edu/peerrs/ to register for and complete the modules Responsible Conduct of Research and Scholarship Training and Human Subjects Research Protections. Record course completion and send certificates to the program director.

Human Subjects Research Protections explains the regulatory requirements and ethical consideration to project human research subjects.
