The Center for Global Health Equity is pleased to present the first of our seminar speakers for the 2024-2025 academic year: Mayssa Rekhis, Lecturer, School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of Gothenburg (Sweden).
Rekhis will be presenting her work exploring the intersection of migration, global health, & social justice. The event is free of charge and is open to the U-M community, thanks to our co-sponsors: the Office of Global Public Health and the Department of Anthropology.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Mayssa Rekhis, PhD is an interdisciplinary scholar and activist whose work bridges multiple fields and areas of expertise. She earned her medical degree from the University of Tunis el-Manar and holds a PhD in anthropology from the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris. Her diverse career spans research, education, and activism, with a primary focus on health, social justice, and migration.
Dr. Rekhis's interdisciplinary research explores the profound human experiences of extreme violence, trauma, suffering, and exile. She critically examines the roles of psychiatry and psychotherapy, the processes of subjectivation, and mechanisms of healing. Her unique approach enriches the academic discourse by synthesizing insights from anthropology, medicine, and social sciences.
Over the last ten years, Rekhis has worked extensively across South West Asia, North Africa, East Africa, and Europe. She has made significant contributions in the non-profit sector as a researcher, practitioner, activist, and consultant, demonstrating her ability to integrate knowledge from various disciplines to address complex issues.
