Learning is Not a Spectator Sport: Using Active Learning to Create Excitement and Enhance Learning
University of Michigan School of Public Health
M1123 SPH II, 1415 Washington Heights Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2029

Compared to traditional, lecture-based instruction, instructional approaches that promote interactive engagement have been shown to result in significantly higher learning gains, better conceptual understanding, better problem-solving test scores, more positive student attitudes, and higher levels of student persistence. In fact, the benefits of active learning are so great that some have argued that it's unethical to teach any other way (Freeman et al. 2014). In this session we will present strategies and easy-to-use tools to introduce active learning into your course without sacrificing content coverage.
