Dr. Grace Fortuna is currently the National Clinical Manager for InGenesis. Abstract: Health literacy, an individual's capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services is needed to make appropriate health decisions. As healthcare professionals, we expect patients to possess the skills to understand the information delivered to them. However, health information is often unfamiliar, complicated, and technical, even for people with higher levels of education. The definition of health literacy is evolving from a focus on clinical risk to a focus on health literacy as a skill. Patients have the right to understand health care information that is necessary for them to safely care for themselves, and to choose among available alternatives. Health care professionals have a duty to provide information in simple, clear and plain language and to check that patients have understood the information before ending the conversation. The seminar will be followed by an informal discussion until 2:30 p.m.
