Michigan COVID-19 Recovery Surveillance Study Data Report 11: Public Health Surveillance
of Michigan Adults with COVID-19 Across Seven Pandemic Phases from March 2020 through
May 2022
- Approximately 60% of adults diagnosed with COVID-19 in Phase 1 had severe or very
severe COVID-19 symptoms during their illness compared to 26% of adults diagnosed
in Phase 7.
- Approximately 25% of adults diagnosed with COVID-19 in Phase 1 were hospitalized compared
to 3% of adults diagnosed in Phase 7.
- Approximately 25% of adults diagnosed with COVID-19 in Phase 1 experienced Long COVID
compared to about 7% of adults diagnosed in Phase 7.
- More than 10% of adults diagnosed with COVID-19 in Phases 2 and 5 were uninsured at
the time of their diagnosis.
- Among adults who sought care for their COVID-19 illness, adults most commonly sought
care at an emergency room across all phases, except in Phase 7.
- Across pandemic phases, at least 16% of adults with COVID-19 experienced anxiety symptoms
and 10% experienced depressive symptoms.
- At least 10% of adults with COVID-19 across each phase were unable to pay important
bills, with more than 20% in Phases 1 and 6.
- More than 50% of adults diagnosed with COVID-19 in Phases 1 and 2 reported that they
or their family experienced a loss of employment or reduction in hours worked, which
decreased to 32% in Phase 7.
