Doctoral Student Process and Forms
Overview of the PhD in Epidemiologic Sciences.
Our program is organized around the following progression through two stages, the Pre-Candidate phase and the Candidate Phase. A total of 36 course credits taken at the Ann Arbor campus for credit (i.e., In-Residence courses) are required to receive the Ph.D. degree. Below is a list of requirements and important form links relevant to each requirement.
Pre-Candidacy Overview
- Requirement 1: Acquire 18 In-Residence course credits.
- Requirement 2: Complete Two Semesters of Epidemiology 889
- Requirement 3: Complete Specific Core Coursework
- Requirement 4: Pass the Competency Examination
Candidacy Overview and Forms
- Requirement 1: Complete a total of 18 credits during Candidacy, including EPID 890 and EPID 995.
- Requirement 2: Form an approved dissertation committee.
- Requirement 3: Prepare a written Prospectus describing your dissertation research plan.
- Requirement 4: Complete a Preliminary Oral Examination (“Prospectus Presentation”) of your dissertation proposal.
- Requirement 5: Meet regularly with your dissertation committee and your dissertation chair. Submit confirmation of committee meetings and complete annual updates to your Individual Development Plan.
- Requirement 6: Hold a pre-defense meeting around 3-6 months before your intended defense date and set and announce a defense date.
- Requirement 7: Register as a student for your defense semester and complete Rackham’s steps to defend and submit dissertation.
