My Journey to Advance Data Science for Intelligent and Equitable Health: Challenges and Opportunities

University of Pennsylvania

Professor, Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics
Director, Center for Cancer Data Science
Associate Director, Penn Institute for Biomedical Informatics
Director, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Core, Abramson Cancer Center

In this talk, I will briefly share my academic journey that started as a graduate student in Biostatistics at the University of Michigan in 2001, highlighting my experiences in building a research program that has evolved to involve both method-driven and problem-driven research in health data science. I will also share my research group’s recent works on developing robust statistical and machine learning methods for complex health data towards the goal of advancing intelligent, equitable health, and discuss daunting challenges and exciting opportunities in this space. Our experiences have demonstrated that building on the core principles of statistical thinking a trans-disciplinary health data science approach offers great promises to accelerate innovation and harness the full power of ever-growing health data to address complex, real world problems in public health and medicine.
