As I learn more about Grenada in the classroom and prepare for our week-long class project in May, I am excited about the opportunities this trip presents, especially the history, culture, and vibrant community.

Growing up in Bangladesh, cricket was a huge part of my life, and like many fans, I loved watching the West Indies team play. As a kid, I used to think the West Indies was just one country. As I grew up, I learned that the West Indies represents a group of island nations, each with its own unique identity. That’s how I first learned about many Caribbean countries — Grenada being one of them.

As someone who likes to explore spices from various cultures, Grenada is fascinating to me. Famously known as the “Spice Isle,” Grenada is a place where spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves are not just ingredients but a way of life. I’m especially intrigued by the fact that nutmeg is so central to Grenada’s identity that it’s even featured on the national flag — a powerful symbol of the island’s history and economy.

Most of all, I’m eager to meet the local community members we’ll be working with. As part of our class project, we’ll be focusing on a Policy Analysis of Grenada’s National School Policy on Drugs and Alcohol, working alongside the Ministry of Education. I’m curious to see how this policy shapes the experiences of students, teachers, and families — and how the community views both the challenges and opportunities around policy on drug and alcohol. I’m especially interested in understanding how Grenada’s cultural context, social norms, and values influence the development and implementation of such policies.

I know these conversations will not only shape our project but also deepen my understanding of what it means to work in partnership with a community. This trip feels like an incredible opportunity to step into a new cultural space with an open mind and a listening heart. I can’t wait to see what stories, connections, and lessons Grenada has in store for us.
