Beyond the Data: A Journey of Community, Collaboration, and Reflection

During my time in Texas, I had the opportunity to reflect on both my personal and professional growth. Although I spent only a week in San Antonio, conversations with community members reshaped my understanding of what “community” truly means. Growing up, I thought of community as simply a shared geographic space or common interests. However, I now realize community runs deeper—it means unwavering support in both good and difficult times, without conditions. The people I met in San Antonio exemplified this, making me appreciate the strength of their community and inspiring me to seek a similarly supportive environment in the future. I am deeply grateful to the focus group members who shared their experiences and broadened my perspective.

Beyond these transformative moments, this opportunity provided hands-on training in survey creation, focus group facilitation, and qualitative analysis—skills that complemented my background in quantitative research. I strengthened my interpersonal and communication skills, gained new perspectives on my own community, and built meaningful, lasting connections with my peers. Embracing unexpected opportunities, such as hosting an additional focus group, required extra time and analysis but ultimately enriched our experience. The teamwork and mutual support from my peers made the process both manageable and rewarding. What initially seemed like an extra task ended up becoming an invaluable moment for self-reflection and meaningful conversation.

This journey was profound in more ways than one. While our primary goal was to conduct a community health assessment, I left with far more than research findings. The insights and lived experiences shared by community members enriched my understanding in ways no classroom setting ever could. Engaging directly with the community proved to be the most valuable aspect of this journey. I am sincerely grateful to AHEC, Ella Austin, WestCare, Lauren, and ANarris for making this opportunity possible.
