Student Resources

Career Preparation

Members of the faculty and staff meet to define career goals and to discuss job search procedures. Students receive assistance through the Professional Development course and SPH Career Services in preparing resumes, writing cover letters, and interviewing. The department also runs seminars to acquaint students with the various facets of the industry, and the skills and interests that best fit those different aspects.

Student groups host industry speakers who discuss their own careers and career options for the students as well as hold mock interviews between alumni and students.

Additional assistance comes from our alumni, with whom we have an extensive and active networking system. They are located throughout the 50 states and internationally. Many of our alumni are top-level executives who lend significant support to the department.

Student Organizations

The HMP student body is a group of young professionals—comparable to similar groups of students in business, medicine, and law at U-M and other leading schools. They work together and play together, and are motivated, friendly, intelligent, and sociable. Many participate in the professional and social activities of U-M's  1,400+ student organizations, which include groups involved in service learning, activism, performing arts, cultural/ethnic, health & wellness, and more. Some organizations of particular interest to SPH/HMP students are:

  • Health Policy Student Association (HPSA)
  • Michigan Healthcare Executive Student Association (MHESA)
  • Public Health Student Association (PHSA)
  • Women in Health Leadership (WiHL)
  • Asian American Public Health Student Association (AAPHA)
  • La Salud Student Association
  • Public Health Students of African Descent (PHSAD)
  • Public Health Genetics Society
  • The Health Law Society
  • Ross School of Business Healthcare Club

Professional events include lectures, symposia, and brown bag discussion sessions on topics of interest to students and faculty. Social activities include dinner dances, happy hours, bowling nights, karaoke, and intramural sports. Ann Arbor offers a multitude of cultural, social, and sports opportunities, most within walking distance from campus. Nearby, Detroit has professional sports teams, world-class entertainment and restaurants, and a vibrant downtown art and music scene.

HMP students also participate in local and national conferences, such as those sponsored by the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and the American Public Health Association (APHA). In addition, the department and the School of Public Health host several guest speakers and symposia throughout the year. Please refer to the SPH calendar for information about upcoming events.

Volunteer Activities

HMP students are committed to serving the local, national, and international communities. Many students engage in volunteer activities, such as working at Ann Arbor's Lyn Hadley Memorial Clinic for the Homeless, participating in elementary school health education programs, and organizing food and clothing drives for victims of natural disasters or poverty.
