Research Assistant Professor

General Information:

The Department of Biostatistics at the University of Michigan is seeking applicants for a Research Assistant Professor, with a research focus on developing interpretable statistical machine learning methods, with a specific emphasis on applications to neurological disorders and diabetes. The candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a rigorous research program focusing on the development of novel statistical machine learning approaches that are interpretable and applicable to a broad base of users, ranging from basic statisticians to practicing clinicians. This individual will also serve as a liaison and statistician for multiple large clinical research groups on campus, with an emphasis on neurological disorders and diabetes research.

REquired qualifications include:

A Ph.D. Degree in Statistics/Biostatistics or related quantitative disciplines; previous research experience; training and experience in developing an applying statistical methodologies to the health sciences; successful track record of extramural funding; excellent verbal and written communication skills; motivation to act as a team member in collaborative research ventures.

Department Information:

The Department of Biostatistics currently has 43 primary faculty members and more than 270 full-time Ph.D. and Master’s students. The Department is involved in cutting edge methodological research and scientific investigation in many areas of public health and biomedical research. The Department has close ties with the Department of Statistics, the Institute for Social Research, the Medical School, the Michigan Institute for Data Science, the Institute of Health Policy and Innovation, the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, and other research groups across campus. In FY22, the Department of Biostatistics had $33 million in research expenditures. Within the Department, there are 5 impactful Research Centers, including: The Cancer Data Science Shared Resource Center; The Center for Precision Health Data Science; The Center for Statistical Genetics; The Kidney Epidemiology and Cost Center; and the Statistical Analysis of Biomedical and Educational Research Center. The Department has two training grants, The Genome Science Training Program, and the Biostatistics Training in Cancer Research Program, as well as an undergraduate training program, the Big Data Summer Institute.
