Our recent trip to San Antonio, Texas, was an enriching experience filled with laughter, adventure, and meaningful conversations. It was a journey that exposed me to the power of providing people the space to share their thoughts and how that fosters a more connected community. Through this trip, I gained valuable insights into the challenges faced by the local community, especially concerning healthcare and mental health, and witnessed firsthand the strength and unity that comes from open communication and mutual support.
During the focus group interviews, I was struck by the community's concerns about asthma and the apparent disconnect between doctors and patients. Many individuals expressed frustration about receiving a diagnosis without adequate education on using their medication or understanding its purpose. This gap in communication highlighted a significant issue in the healthcare system that leaves patients feeling vulnerable and unsupported. Learning that the east side of San Antonio lacks hospitals and urgent care facilities was alarming, underscoring the disparities in healthcare access within the community.
One of the most impactful moments of the trip occurred at The Neighborhood Place, where Ludi, a dedicated community health worker, gave a presentation on mental health and self-care. The activity my fellow classmates and I came up with was called "grateful flowers," where each person wrote what they were grateful for on paper-shaped petals. This activity fostered a deep sense of connection and reflection among the participants. People shared personal memories and current challenges, and the room was filled with an outpouring of condolences, love, and respect. The community’s tight-knit nature and their support for one another during the sharing were truly heartwarming and inspiring.
Navigating discussions about difficult topics such as healthcare shortcomings and personal struggles was challenging. Facilitating these conversations required sensitivity and a keen understanding of the community’s dynamics. Initially, I was uncertain about how to approach these discussions, as I am an outsider to this community and do not have personal connections to asthma. Despite this setback, I saw the power of observing an inclusive and supportive environment and tried to create a non-judgmental space. Fostering an environment where everyone felt heard and respected was crucial in encouraging open dialogue. This experience pushed me to develop my facilitation skills and approach challenging conversations with greater empathy and patience.
Pictured are the amazing people who attended Ludi’s presentation and participated in the Loteria game, proudly holding their grateful flowers. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and experience. The community I witnessed in San Antonio exemplifies a level of unity and support that we should all aspire to achieve in our efforts to reduce disparities and promote health and well-being. This journey has not only contributed to my personal and professional growth but has also reinforced my commitment to supporting and nurturing resilient and connected communities.
