Lessons From Grenada

It’s hard to believe that just eight weeks ago, I was sitting in a classroom learning about a small island nation in the Caribbean that I had never heard of. It’s even harder to believe that I actually spent a full week there (it definitely felt longer). As I reflect on the work I did in Grenada, a few takeaways come to mind:

●      Grenada was a whirlwind. That description comes to mind as I reflect on how the week went. We went to 8 different schools in 3 days across 4 parishes. It was a lot of work, overwhelming at times, but so worth it to engage with the Grenadian people.

●      Grenada was beautiful. The country itself was a gorgeous paradise fit for anyone’s needs. Whether you like to lie on the beach or jump into a waterfall, the island has something for everyone.

●      Grenadians care about their youth. It was clear from every conversation we had, from principals to community members to law enforcement, that the people of Grenada want the best for their youth. They believe in the children's potential and want to do all they can to set them on the right path.

Part of why I love public health is the people you meet and the places it can take you. At the start of my program, I would have never imagined traveling across the Atlantic to lead focus groups, talk to community members, and assist a government agency in revising its school drug policy.

I’m incredibly grateful for opportunities like this in the field and hope that the lessons I learned in Grenada follow me wherever I go next.
