Science, Service, and the Spice Isle: My Mission with the Grenada Red Cross Society

Elinor Artsy Navon
I have always looked toward the Caribbean with a sense of curiosity and a strong desire to experience it firsthand. As I prepare to depart for the service trip this upcoming break, my focus has shifted toward the public health work that my cohort and I will be performing during our time there. This experience isn't just a trip – it’s a chance to bridge the gap between my studies in Environmental Health Sciences and the real-life needs of the Grenada Red Cross Society (GRCS).
Building Sustainable Impact
One of the things I most hope to gain from this trip is the knowledge that my group left behind something sustainable and tangible. My core project involves developing a fundraising platform for the GRCS: a tool designed to provide long-term support for their vital community work. I look forward to working with the GRCS team and connecting with Grenadians living abroad, all while strengthening the capabilities of the Red Cross to continue to provide their essential services.
Admittedly, I have a few apprehensions. My background is based in the sciences (first in medical training, and now in public health and policy), and a fundraising project requires a different skillset. There is a bit of doubt about whether my skills will align perfectly with the technical needs of a donation platform. However, I’ve learned through my previous solo travels that the best results often come from stepping outside your comfort zone. With that, I expect to rediscover my own adaptability and am ready to apply the lessons I’ve learned from past travels, such as staying flexible and changing plans when the unexpected arises. I plan to work closely with my teammates and, together, we will turn any technical setbacks into opportunities for growth.
Balancing the Beach and Work Ethic
Of course, I am also looking forward to Grenada’s vibrant culture, local foods, and the chance to live near the beach! My goal is to immerse myself in the beauty of Grenada while maintaining the strong work ethic necessary to provide the GRCS with a high-quality product. I look forward to enjoying exploring the island with my peers and, in parallel, collaborating with my groupmates and mentors (both GRCS and PHAST) to produce a positive result that continues to benefit the community long after we depart.
A Global Perspective
Beyond my professional goals, I am eager to engage with the local community. I hope to arrive home after this week of service with a greater understanding of what life is like for those living in Grenada, moving beyond a “tourist” lens to see the world through a truly global perspective. My husband and young daughters have become part of this journey, supporting me to take this opportunity (and already awaiting the souvenirs I’ve promised!). I hope that by the time I return, I’ll have had memorable experiences, made strong new connections, and felt the deep satisfaction of a job well done.
