It was a sin to kill a mockingbird. The intimidation of talking to the community was lessened. Even when not asked, the participants would offer suggestions for restaurants or sharing San Antonio’s culture. I loved the San Antonio community whether it was the waitress striking up a conversation of you’re from Michigan, retail sales offered some water when I had trouble finding the water fountain.
This real-world experience allowed me to handle complex, live situations that simply cannot be taught in a classroom setting. Though a big learning curve, I learnt how to adapt to ambiguous uncomfortable situations with more confidence through the guidance of our instructors (Sade and Lauren).
Ultimately, this fieldwork ignited my passion and motivation for public health, inspiring me to help improve the community’s resources while allowing me to discover my own values, capabilities, and growth as a future professional.
