Planning your Internship: Helpful Questions to Ask

Many global public health internships are initiated through networking rather than applying to a pre-defined position. This provides interns with the opportunity to customize the experience to their learning goals and the current needs of the partner organization. Consider the questions below to help in defining and developing your global internship.

  • What specific projects will I work on, and are they suitable for a full-time, graduate-level internship?
  • Are there opportunities for remote work if travel is not feasible?

  • What skills are required to succeed in this role?
  • What new skills or experiences can I expect to gain?

  • Who will supervise or mentor me, and how often will we meet?
  • Can regular online meetings be scheduled for remote internships?

  • What are the housing, transportation, and daily living costs?
  • What is the typical work schedule and dress code?

  • What language proficiency is needed for the office and community?
  • Are there cultural norms I should be aware of?

  • What deliverables are expected by the end of the internship?
  • How will my work contribute to the organization’s goals?
