Eligibility
The University of Michigan MHRT Program welcomes applications from candidates who meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Academic requirements:
- Candidates must be enrolled at an accredited U.S. academic institution at one of
the following levels:
- Postdoctoral (recent graduates are eligible)
- Doctoral
- Masters
- Health Professions
- Postbacalaureate
- Currently enrolled University of Michigan undergraduate at the Junior or Senior level
- Must have achieved a GPA of 2.9 or higher (or the equivalent) in their current academic program
- Candidates must be enrolled at an accredited U.S. academic institution at one of
the following levels:
- Demographic requirements:
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Are a member of an underrepresented group in biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences including:

- Racial/Ethnic minorities (Black/African American, Asian American, Latinx, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander)
- Individuals from rural areas
- Individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds
- Individuals with disabilties

- Other requirements:
- Language requirements: For projects in Chile and Nicaragua, candidates must demonstrate Spanish language fluency or a high level or professional proficiency
- Most countries with which we partner for international research training placements require a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity beyond the end of the research training. We encourage you to renew your passport as soon as possible should it expire within that timeframe.
- Please note: PhD and Postdoctoral candidates, if you are currently funded through the NIH, you are eligible to apply for the MHRT program. However, if placed, you would be ineligible to receive a stipend through MHRT. All other research and travel costs would be covered by the MHRT program.
