The University of Michigan Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training (MHRT) Program, funded by the National Institutes of Health, seeks to increase the number of researchers from underrepresented backgrounds entering biomedical and behavioral health science careers.

We support the research training of students at all academic levels interested in eliminating health disparities among disadvantaged populations, with a particular focus on maternal health, child health and global public health.

Program highlights:

  • Expenses paid program providing hands-on opportunities to engage in research overseas on health disparities. Michigan MHRT has partner sites in Chile, India, Kenya, Nicaragua, Indonesia, Thailand, Fiji and Nepal. Project sites and placement focus may vary each year.
  • Research preparation that includes training in health equity, cultural humility, research ethics, and project-specific research training.
  • Mentorship at both the University of Michigan and the research training site.
  • Opportunities for research presentations and contribution to manuscripts.
