Summary

Dr. Piette’s global health research teaching/training, service, and practice focus on improving support for people with chronic mental health and medical illnesses, primarily in Latin America. His work emphasizes brief behavioral interventions, the use of community health workers and digital health tools, and evidence-based approaches to health communication such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. Recent projects include work in Honduras in which he is supporting the main psychiatric hospital in transitioning from paper-based to electronic health records. Other projects include capacity-building for teaching about brief behavior change and digital health with two universities in Medellin, Colombia (Universidad Remington and Universidad CES), a similar project with the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, and direct assistance to adults suffering from mood disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders throughout Latin America as well as recent Spanish-speaking immigrants to Washtenaw County. In 2021, Dr. Piette led a virtual masterclass series on digital health that was attended by more than 15,000 physicians and public health leaders in Asia, Russia, Latin America, and Europe.
