Jeffrey Alexander Named Inaugural HCMD Distinguished Research Scholar
The Academy of Management's Health Care Management Division (HCMD) presented a new
Distinguished Research Scholar Award to Jeffrey Alexander, the Richard Carl Jelinek Professor of Health Management and Policy at U-M SPH. The
award recognizes a record of high quality scholarly research in health care management,
particularly organizational arrangements in the health care sector, with particular
emphasis on their environmental determinants and their contribution to comparative
performance.
"Dr. Alexander's published work has been characterized by exceptionally high quality,
theoretical development, and valuable contributions in the field of health care management
and policy," said Cheryl Rathert of the HCMD Research Committee, who presented the
award at the Academy of Management conference in August. "His empirical and theoretical
contributions are recognized by his peers in schools of public health, business and
management, and place him as one of the top organizational scholars in the field."
Professor Alexander’s research has focused on issues dealing with organizational
arrangements in the health care sector, with particular emphasis on their environmental
determinants and their contribution to comparative performance. He is a leading empirical
researcher in the area of health care governance. Much of his work was has been concerned
with how the environments of organizations shape organizational structure, process,
and effectiveness. He is the lead or co-author of 255 peer-reviewed journal articles,
with 12 under review, and over 200 research presentations at various professional
meetings and academic institutions.
