U-M Regents Appoint Carmen R. Green, M.D., UMHS Assoc. VP and Assoc. Dean for Health Equity and Inclusion

Carmen GreenFollowing a national search, HMP Professor Carmen R. Green, M.D., has been named the inaugural UMHS associate vice president and associate dean for health equity and inclusion. Her appointment is effective February 1, 2013.

In announcing Dr. Green's appointment, Doug Strong, M.B.A., CEO, U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, and James O. Woolliscroft, M.D. dean, U-M Medical School, noted that this new position "is within the Medical School and the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers, underlying its importance to achieving one of UMHS' strategic goals — the promotion of diversity, cultural competency and satisfaction among faculty, staff, learners and leaders.The AVP and associate dean position was created as part of UMHS' strategy to achieve this goal by developing mechanisms for diversity and cultural competency among faculty and staff, and advance clinical care and research that targets underserved populations.

"In addition to Dr. Green's appointment, the Medical School's Office of Diversity and Career Development was renamed the Health System Office for Health Equity and Inclusion, and placed under her watch."

Dr. Green is a tenured professor of anesthesiology, with joint appointments in HMP and the Medical School's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is co-director of the Community Liaison Core and director of the Healthier Black Elders Center for the Michigan Center for Urban African American Aging Research at the U-M Institute for Social Research.
