Pushing Outward

Detroit Metro Airport

Christina Negrete, Nutritional Sciences Student

As departure to the islands gets closer, my nerves are setting in more and more. However, I’m excited because this is going to be an amazing learning and personal growth experience. Everything about this trip is forcing me out of my comfort zone – from having to fly to being in a new environment with no one I know. I’m excited to learn about what I can overcome and how far I can push myself in this environment to make the best of this experience. I’m also looking forward to getting a first-hand look at how much progress has been made and how much more there really is left to still do to help everyone on the islands after the disaster. Hearing about this type of stuff in the news is one thing but seeing it in person and hearing it directly from the people that were impacted is completely different. Things aren’t always as they may appear in one stream of communication.  After learning a little more about how the CASPER survey questions are divided, I’m excited to learn more about their methods. I’m curious about the training that will take place at the Department of Health and how they’ve been conducting things and look forward to working in diverse teams that will provide a different lens to the way this work can be conducted because of their prior experience.
