When master's student Jasmine Brown interned in Detroit at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, she found she was able to broaden her knowledge of the health care industry and apply her skills to help solve challenges from a new perspective.
While earning an MPH in Epidemiology, Madeline Levasseur did a summer internship at the Kent County Health Department, working on multiple data analysis projects to help identify health factors at play in the community.
Spending hours as a child doing math puzzles was only part of Mousumi Banerjee’s preparation for a career in biostatistics, where she now applies rigorous statistical analysis to improve clinical and population-wide health outcomes.
“To be honest, biostatistics was a huge risk. I was intrigued by the idea of using my math skills to serve what one might call a greater purpose. But planning a career in a field I was just beginning to understand was definitely a risk,” says Beesley.
Allison Burlock has made it her mission to make statistics easier for everyone to understand, and to improve patient care while doing so.
As a grad student, it's been a transition to work in a more applied mathematical field, but I'm really enjoying it. The breadth and tangible benefit of our work with respect to human health truly differentiates biostatistics from other quantitative disciplines.
