Long before the dangers of global warming were clear to us, public health researchers were pursuing protective measures for our most basic and valuable environmental resources and linking that work to concerns about health equity and environmental justice.
Alextia Armstrong earned an MPH in Environmental Health Sciences in the Environment, Sustainability, and Heath program. She interned at the Ann Arbor Water Treatment Plant, where she conducted water quality tests, analyzed data, and worked on a sustainability project with City Hall.
Zoey Laskaris grew up with people who worked long hours for little pay. When she realized that identifying hazardous conditions in workplaces came naturally to her, she decided to apply her passion and her talents to the field of public health.
Karin Dove knows the public health work she does will impact large populations of people. Data is her key tool in that endeavor, and translating the value of that data is one or her biggest challenges and joys.
After the Navy, I went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Armstrong State University in Savannah, Georgia. Then I came to the University of Michigan to work as a research staff member for Rick Nietzel, associate professor of environmental health sciences. After a year and a half, I began the master’s program in industrial hygiene and earned my Master of Science degree in 2016.
While working in the Great Lakes as a marine ecologist, Russ Moll decided to take his understanding of data one step further by pursuing an education at Michigan Public Health.
