Epidemiologist with a dual degree in social work set to begin career with Defense Health Agency

Frances Dean, MPH, MSW

Now that Frances Dean has earned a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health and a Master of Social Work in Interpersonal Practice in Integrated Health, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse from the School of Social Work after graduating in December, Dean is committed to working in the public health field for the federal government for the next two and a half years as a behavioral epidemiologist.

Emily Martin, associate professor of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, is a core investigator for the CDC’s US Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness Network, the CDC’s IVY network for hospital vaccine effectiveness, and the NIAID Centers of Excellence for Influenza Research and Response. She is the faculty lead for the new Public Health IDEAS for Combating Infectious Diseases.

Though she said, “It was Michigan Biostatistics that chose me,” when she was pursuing a graduate degree program in statistics.

Although her work environment and the guidelines she was committed to follow remained in a near constant state of flux, Floyd said it was vital to remain true to her commitment to serve the public good.
