As a trained psychologist working in public health, Enrique Neblett understands the interdisciplinary power of public health. Neblett’s research focuses on the mental health of Black young people, in particular how racism-related stress affects health outcomes.
Kwame McGlory says, as a nurse, you are always active, always helping, and no matter what role he is in, that spirit is what drives him. Over this past year, he has had a unique view of the COVID-19 pandemic: he’s faced this crisis head on as a health care worker, a contact tracer, and as a public health student. While he studies public health online, he continues to prioritize the well-being of others and actively help the community he serves.
Kennedy Dubose studies public health not only for personal and intellectual reasons but also for what she sees as moral, ethical imperatives. Growing up, she saw public health systems failing Black communities. With a combination of local and global training, she is looking to promote more equitable community health in Detroit and around the globe.
The field of industrial hygiene is a bridge between human workers and the risky environments many must navigate to earn a living, says master’s student Emilio Ronquillo. He is studying industrial hygiene at Michigan to help create safety improvements that protect not only workers but also their families and communities.
Socially engaged design might go by other names. But by any name, it is central to how we structure many of the public health interventions and programs that help people get and stay healthy. Master’s student Anthony Dang sees tremendous potential for role socially engaged design to help unlock new solutions to public health problems.
