April Zeoli appointed to the Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force
April Zeoli, an associate professor of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and policy core director of the University of Michigan Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention, has been appointed to Michigan’s Gun Violence Prevention Task Force by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Zeoli’s research investigates the impact of state-level firearm laws, including extreme risk protection orders (also called red flag laws), on interpersonal firearm violence. Her work also focuses on domestic violence-related firearm restrictions, such as laws that require or allow firearm restrictions on domestic violence protective orders, and whether these laws are associated with reductions in intimate partner homicide. Her studies provide evidence on whether and how firearm safety policies reduce firearm violence and aim to improve the implementation of these laws through science.
“Scientifically rigorous research is needed to better understand the problem of firearm violence and to determine what interventions are effective in reducing firearm injury and death. I look forward to serving on the Governor’s Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and bringing the research evidence to bear on the problem of firearm violence in Michigan,” said Zeoli.
Zeoli will work alongside a wide range of stakeholders as part of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, including state department directors, medical experts, law enforcement professionals, and tribal representatives from across the state to identify the root causes of firearm violence, compile relevant data, maximize existing resources, and recommend policies to save lives.
