Darrell Hudson named vice provost for access and opportunity
Darrell Hudson, James S. Jackson Collegiate Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Behavior and Health Equity at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, has been appointed Vice Provost for Access and Opportunity in the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The University of Michigan Board of Regents approved the appointment at its September 17 meeting, effective November 1, 2026.
Hudson joined Michigan Public Health in fall 2024 after 13 years at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis. In his two years as chair, he built a bold vision for health equity, launched a mentored research program pairing MPH students with faculty, and introduced a new advising strategy to expand student access and guidance. His leadership has also been marked by consistent, people-centered communication with staff and faculty.
A leading scholar on racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic health inequities, Hudson has published more than 70 peer-reviewed papers and has led research funded by the National Institute on Aging, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Kellogg Foundation. He is the President-Elect of the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Sciences, co-directs the Michigan Integrative Well-Being and Inequality Program, and mentors junior scholars at the university and nationwide.
A two-time Michigan Public Health graduate, Hudson, MPH ‘05, PhD ‘09, will remain on the school’s faculty, continuing to reach and mentor students in his new role.
